There’s always fun to be found in Northeast Mississippi, no matter the time of year or the season. Winter, spring, summer, and fall, this area’s got a full calendar of events, an endless list of activities to enjoy, and plenty of adventures to uncover. Wintertime around here might get a little chilly, but there are still lots of ways to have fun while staying warm! Check out these indoor activities in NE Mississippi.
Union County Heritage Museum
Located in New Albany’s Historic Northside Neighborhood, Union County Heritage Museum has been recognized as one one of the region’s top museums and interpretive centers. It offers a unique walk back through time, from prehistoric days to the modern age—including monumental eras and events like the Civil War and Reconstruction.
The museum is open Tuesday – Saturday and admission price is a donation rather than a flat fee.
High Point Coffee Roasters
Just another coffee shop, right? Not quite; High Point imports coffee from 14 different countries, roasts it on site, then ships it around the country. It’s also the official coffee of the Baltimore Ravens (though they apparently didn’t feel like continuing their 12-game winning streak in the playoffs), and visitors are welcome to tour the facility and sample the ultra-fresh roasts.
Downtown New Albany
Okay, so it’s not technically inside, but there are plenty of indoor spots to explore in Downtown New Albany—shops, stores, eateries, antique stores, and more. If the weather’s nice, take a stroll Downtown for some window shopping, grab a bite at a cozy restaurant, and maybe even check out the waterfront park.
Bonus: There are lots of events happening Downtown, too!
Downtown Oxford / The Square
Again, not technically inside, but plenty of indoor spots to enjoy in Downtown Oxford! Like New Albany’s local business district, Oxford’s quaint historic center is home to a variety of local businesses, shops, boutiques, and eateries, making it the perfect spot for some strolling, window shopping, and delicious dining.
Bonus: Did you know that Downtown Oxford was the inspiration for William Faulkner’s fictional town of Jefferson, which is featured in many of his novels?
The University of Mississippi Museum
Located in Oxford, the University of Mississippi Museum has quite a variety of collections—from Greek and Roman artifacts to modern art. There are also educational programs and camps, too, if you’re looking for ways to keep the kids occupied.
Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts
The Ole Miss Ford Center for the Performing Arts plays host to a variety of productions and performances throughout the year, ranging from music and dance to theatre to educational talks and youth programs.
Lyric Theatre
Love live music? Catch a show at The Lyric Theatre just outside of the Square in Downtown Oxford; there are always shows happening here! This unique historic building was once a stable owned by William Faulkner’s family, but was transformed into a silent film theatre in the 1920s. It became Oxford’s first movie theater, and even saw the world premier of the adaptation of Faulkner’s “Intruder in the Dust”. Today, it hosts live music events almost every weekend.
