The holiday season is almost upon on us, and with it comes a packed community calendar! In the New Albany and Northeast Mississippi area, everyone is getting ready to ring in the winter season, and there are tons of ways to join in the festivities.

Take a look at some of the highlights going on around the area during the month of November, and see how you can get involved with the surrounding community.

Holiday Open House

Holiday decorations in a small store. Head to Downtown New Albany and support small businesses for the annual Holiday Open House. Sponsored by the New Albany Main Street Association, shops and restaurants all over town will be hosting special sales, giveaways, and surprises for the event.

There’s sure to be tons of decked out decorations and prime window shopping, so enjoy an afternoon of strolling around town, and pick up a few gifts while you’re at it!

Small Business Saturday

An open sign on a hook in a storeStill on the search for some holiday presents? Small Business Saturday is a nationwide event, sponsored by American Express, that aims to stimulate interest in the local economy.

In the Northeast Mississippi area, several towns are participating — like New Albany and Tupelo — and dozens of shops will be open for business. If you’re still missing a few key decorations or gifts, this is the perfect change to snag them.

Christmas Parade

Marching nutcrackersThis year’s theme for the New Albany Christmas Parade is Christmas in Toyland. You can expect tons of floats, marching bands, horses, and Santa himself to make an appearance! Each float in the parade will be judged, and top scores receive special prizes.

The New Albany Christmas Parade is just one of many in Northeast Mississippi, so check out a few others (like Tupelo’s 70th anniversary parade!) if you’re interested in even more holiday cheer!

Christmas Tree Lighting

Not only will there a wealth of festive decorations and twinkling lights, but attendees can also enjoy live music, free hot cocoa, visits and pictures with Santa Claus, and charming carriage rides.

New this year, several businesses will have booths set up for vending to create a mini Christmas Market!

Meet the Grinch

A small figurine of the Grinch. Are you looking for an iconic holiday sneer to counteract all this cheer? Well you’re in luck: the green meanie himself, the Mr. Grinch, will be making the trek from Who-ville to Tupelo this year! Grab some family and friends and get a photo with this holiday treasure for $5.

After your photo op, head to Ballard Park to catch the Lighting of the Park event and enjoy a stroll through the thousands of twinkling lights.
