Trek through the Holly Springs National Forest
If you know anything about Northeast Mississippi hiking, you’ve probably gone on a trip to the Holly Springs National Forest. This local staple is one of the largest nature preserves in the state, making it a prime place to take in all of the best fall colors. As the summer dogwoods fade away, you’ll be able to enjoy peak foliage all throughout the fall months.
Holly Springs National Forest has trails for every level of hiker. Some of the most popular sites include Baker’s Pond Hiking Trail and the North Cypress Non-Motorized Trail. However, there are miles of other trails to explore, as well as a campground for visitors!
Explore Tomibigbee National Forest
Ready to explore one of the coolest Northeast Mississippi hiking spots? Look no further than Tomibigbee National Forest, which features miles upon miles of trails. The forest itself has over 67,000 acres to explore, so you’ll find yourself coming back again and again. Want to see the peak of the fall colors? Be sure to visit during the middle of October to take it all in.
Locals love the Choctaw Lake Trail, which features stunning waterfront views—it’s the perfect spot to admire the changing leaves. If you’re looking for a unique historical landmark, don’t forget to visit the Owl Creek Mounds. Believe it or not, these archeological marvels were built almost 1,000 years ago!
Discover the Historic Natchez Trace Trail
For hikers wanting to conquer the ultimate challenge, the Natchez Trace Trail is the best place to test your skills while enjoying the autumn landscape. This is easily one of the best Northeast Mississippi hiking trails, but it also extends into Alabama and Tennessee. Many have tackled this 440 mile trail, but don’t worry—you don’t have to venture out of Mississippi to enjoy the highlights.
There are plenty of historic spots to discover as you check out the stunning fall foliage. The Tupelo National Battlefield is just off the trail, and it’s a great way to brush up on your Civil War history. Continue north and you’ll find the Pharr Mounds, an ancient Native American burial site. With so much to see, this is the perfect historical trail for hikers of all levels.
